Celebrating Occupational Therapy Month

“Occupational therapy practitioners ask, ‘What matters to you?’ not, ‘What’s the matter with you?’” — Virginia Stoffel, former president of the American Occupational Therapy Association.

The entire month of April is dedicated to the celebration of occupational therapy. At Flatrock, occupational therapy is an important part of our mission to provide the tools and resources necessary for our residents to thrive and become as independent as possible.

Occupational therapists differ from physical therapists in that they work not only with people with physical challenges, but also with cognitive or sensory disabilities to help them gain independence and enhance their quality of life. This is done by addressing the barriers that affect their patients' emotional, social and physical needs and finding ways to improve their outcomes.

At Flatrock, one of the biggest benefits we have in our work is seeing a resident blossom through occupational therapy. It can be difficult and it takes time, but the gains are monumental.
