Blast Into July: How Disability Pride Month Celebrates Independence, Belonging, and Community

July is a month full of celebration. While many people look forward to Independence Day festivities, July also includes Disability Pride Month, International Self-Care Day on July 24, and International Day of Friendship on July 30.
Each observance highlights something that plays an important role in a fulfilling life, including having the ability to make choices, build meaningful relationships, prioritize well-being, and embrace what makes each person unique.
These values are reflected every day in Flatrock homes, where individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are empowered to live meaningful lives while maintaining their independence, pursuing personal goals, and building lasting connections.
As we Blast into July, it is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the many ways those in the IDD community continue to learn, grow, connect, and thrive.
Independence is More Than Doing Things Alone
When people think about independence, they often think about doing everything on their own. In reality, independence looks different for everyone.
For individuals with IDD, independence is often about having the opportunity to make choices, develop new skills, participate in the community, and work toward personal goals with tailored therapeutic support in place.
In our supportive home environments, residents can build confidence through everyday experiences. Whether it is learning a new responsibility, exploring a favorite hobby, participating in interactive activities, or reaching a personal milestone, each accomplishment helps strengthen independence.
Progress does not have to be measured by major achievements. Sometimes the most meaningful growth happens in small, everyday moments. Every step forward deserves to be celebrated. By focusing on individual strengths and interests, residents are encouraged to take an active role in shaping their lives while receiving the support they need to succeed.
Celebrating Disability Pride Month
July is also Disability Pride Month, a time to recognize the achievements, contributions, and experiences of people with disabilities while celebrating the strengths that make every individual unique.
The observance commemorates the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26, 1990. The ADA was a landmark civil rights law that expanded protection and opportunities for people with disabilities, helping improve access to employment, transportation, public services, and community life. Disability Pride Month is celebrated annually in July to honor the history, achievements, and experiences of the disability community, and to commemorate the signing of the ADA.
Today, Disability Pride Month serves as a reminder that disabilities are a natural part of human diversity. It encourages individuals to embrace their identities, celebrate their accomplishments, and recognize the value they bring to their communities.
Every day, residents discover new interests, build confidence, develop skills, and reach personal goals. Disability Pride Month is an opportunity to celebrate those contributions while fostering environments where people feel respected, included, and empowered to be themselves.
Prioritizing Self-Care and Well-Being
Taking care of ourselves is an important part of living a healthy and fulfilling life, which is why International Self-Care Day serves as such a meaningful reminder each year.
Self-care is often associated with relaxation, but it goes far beyond that. It includes the everyday habits and routines that support physical, emotional, and mental well-being.
For some people, self-care may mean getting enough sleep, eating nutritious meals, or staying physically active. For adults with IDD, it may involve spending time outdoors, enjoying a favorite hobby, or setting aside time to recharge in sensory rooms through therapeutic activities that support relaxation and emotional well-being.
A recent 2026 survey found that 90% of older adults believe self-care improves their quality of life, proving that healthy routines can reduce stress, build confidence, and support greater independence.
Flatrock residents practice self care through various recreational activities and therapies such as gardening, spa days with aromatherapy and stress management and sensory day.
Friendship Creates a Sense of Belonging
Strong relationships can make a meaningful difference in a person's quality of life. That is why International Day of Friendship on July 30 is an important reminder of the value of connection and community.
Friendships provide encouragement, companionship, and a sense of belonging. They create opportunities to share experiences, celebrate milestones, and support one another.
One of the greatest benefits of a supportive home environment is the opportunity to build meaningful relationships. Friendships often develop through shared meals, community outings, recreational activities and therapies, celebrations, and everyday interactions.
Creating opportunities for connection through monthly planning at Flatrock allows us to foster confidence, encourage social growth, and strengthen the sense of community. We also foster friendship through recreational activities and therapies including community outings to Splash Village, cook-offs, and board games and movie nights.
Thriving Together
The themes celebrated throughout July are deeply connected.
Independence helps people pursue their goals and make meaningful choices. Disability Pride encourages individuals to embrace who they are and celebrate their strengths. Self-care supports overall well-being. Friendship creates belonging and connection.
Together, these elements help create a foundation for a fulfilling life.
As we Blast into July, it is worth taking the time to recognize the achievements, strengths, and unique journeys of individuals with IDD. By fostering opportunities for growth, connection, and self-expression, we can help residents build confidence, pursue their goals, and experience a true sense of belonging.
After all, thriving is not about reaching a destination; it’s about continuing to learn, grow, connect, and celebrate each step along the way.
